Holland America Line Unveils 2027 Solar Eclipse and Northern Lights Cruises

Cruise lovers and skywatchers alike can rejoice: Holland America Line has revealed two spectacular new ways to witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring celestial events — the total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 — along with three unforgettable Northern Lights adventures. Whether you dream of viewing the eclipse from the sea or chasing auroras across the Arctic skies, these 2027 sailings promise unforgettable cosmic experiences.

View the Total Solar Eclipse at Sea

Two specially curated itineraries will position Holland America ships in ideal locations off the coasts of Morocco and Tunisia for breathtaking eclipse views.

Nieuw Statendam will sail the 28-Day Legendary Solar Eclipse & Cosmic Port Explorer.

1. 28-Day Legendary Solar Eclipse & Cosmic Port Explorer
Departs July 10, 2027, aboard Nieuw Statendam
This extended voyage sails roundtrip from Rotterdam or Dover and explores 13 ports across Denmark, the UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, and Morocco. Guests will enjoy overnight stays in Tilbury (London) and Barcelona, plus solar-themed shore excursions to landmarks like Stonehenge and the Montjuïc Observatory. The cruise will position near Morocco for maximum eclipse viewing on August 2.

2. 14-Day Solar Eclipse & Astronomical Discovery
Departs July 31, 2027, aboard Oosterdam
Roundtrip from Athens, Greece, this Mediterranean escape includes stops in Tunisia, Malta, Italy, and Greece. The ship will pause near Tunisia during the eclipse, and extended time in Valletta allows guests to explore the Royal Malta Observatory and its historical significance in maritime navigation.

Both itineraries will feature onboard astronomy experts, themed lectures, eclipse glasses, and curated experiences connecting guests to the science and history of celestial events.

Chase the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle

In response to an active solar cycle that favors aurora activity, Holland America is also launching three cruises above the Arctic Circle. Each itinerary features an overnight in Alta, Norway — also known as “The City of the Northern Lights” — and five days spent in prime aurora territory. Guests can even opt-in for a ship-wide wake-up call when the northern lights are spotted.

Northern Lights Cruise Dates and Ships:

  • Oct. 3, 2027: Rotterdam — 14-Day Arctic Journey and Northern Lights (roundtrip from Rotterdam)
  • Oct. 16 & Nov. 6, 2027: Nieuw Statendam — 14-Day Arctic Journey and Northern Lights (roundtrip from Rotterdam or Dover)

Ports of call include Ålesund, Trondheim (with late-night visits), Tromsø, Leknes, Bergen, and Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, offering both natural beauty and rich Scandinavian culture.

Guests at sea have a greater opportunity to witness an eclipse in the clear because the ship can attempt to position itself away from cloud cover.
