A Petrified Forest is back for its 19th Halloween season in Altamonte Springs, Florida, and this year’s event, Chaos Reigns, features three original scare trails, two additional horror experiences, and plenty of opportunities to get your Halloween scares.

I was invited to experience all three of the 2026 scare trails, but my experience with A Petrified Forest actually started a month earlier, when I attended a special media preview that gave me a better understanding of just how much work goes into creating this independently owned Halloween attraction.
After learning what happens behind the scenes, I was excited to return and experience the finished product. Did A Petrified Forest deliver? Let’s get into it!
Disclosure: I attended A Petrified Forest’s Behind the Screams media preview and 2026 haunt event as an invited media guest. Admission and access were provided complimentary. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Behind the Screams: A Look at What Goes Into the Horror
In September, I had the opportunity to attend A Petrified Forest’s Behind the Screams media preview, which offered a fascinating look at the work that goes into bringing the annual Halloween event to life.
The preview included discussions and demonstrations covering everything from hiring and training scareactors to set design, makeup, and wardrobe.
We learned about how performers are recruited and prepared for their roles, the creative decisions that shape each trail’s environment, and the work involved in transforming ordinary people into the terrifying characters guests encounter.
We also got a closer look at how the stories and concepts behind this year’s three scare trails were developed.
One of the more interesting things I learned is that at the end of each season, A Petrified Forest tears apart its scare trails and rebuilds them for the following year.
Think about that for a moment. Rather than simply changing a few decorations and calling it a new experience, the team takes on the enormous task of rebuilding these elaborate environments for the next Halloween season.
That’s a tremendous amount of work, particularly considering the size and length of these trails.
The media preview gave me a whole new appreciation for the effort that goes into making the scares happen. When you walk through one of these attractions, you’re experiencing the culmination of months of planning, construction, rehearsals, and creative work.

Returning to A Petrified Forest for the 2026 Scare Trails
Fast-forward to October, and I was invited back to experience the finished trails.
Before the scares began, I had another opportunity to peek behind the scenes and see what happens as the scareactors prepare for the evening.
What struck me most was just how excited everyone seemed to be.
Some of the scareactors were dancing, clearly enjoying themselves as they waited for the event to begin. Others were taking part in what I can only describe as chainsaw ceremonies.
It was a fun atmosphere, and the performers genuinely looked eager to get out there and start terrifying guests.
That’s a good sign.
You can have the most elaborate sets in the world, but a haunted attraction lives or dies by the energy of its performers. Seeing that enthusiasm before the gates opened gave me high hopes for the evening.
The Opening Moment
Before heading into the trails, I also had the opportunity to watch A Petrified Forest’s opening moment.
Overall, I thought it was good, although where the media was positioned made it difficult to fully appreciate the accompanying music.
The speakers were located directly behind the guests waiting in the queue, so those fans were getting the full audio experience. From where I was standing, however, the music was harder to hear.
That took away a little from the presentation for me, but importantly, the regular guests were positioned to get the full experience, which is exactly how it should be.
With the opening festivities complete, it was time to head into the woods and see what Chaos Reigns had in store.
The Three Scare Trails of A Petrified Forest 2026
For 2026, A Petrified Forest offers three original scare trails:
- The Craving
- Drawn to Death
- Last Responders
Each offers a different theme and atmosphere, and each one takes you on a lengthy journey through its own nightmarish world.
And when I say lengthy, I mean it.
One thing worth emphasizing is that all three of these scare trails are LONG.
These aren’t attractions where you enter a building, turn a few corners, encounter a couple of scareactors, and find yourself back outside.
They are substantial experiences with multiple environments, scenes, and opportunities for scares.
That length is one of the things I appreciated most about the event.
So, how did each one stack up?
The Craving — My Favorite Trail of the Night

My Ranking: #1
The first scare trail I experienced was The Craving, and it ended up being my favorite of the evening.
The premise takes guests through different periods of history, exploring one of humanity’s darkest taboos: cannibalism.
What impressed me most was how effectively the creative team brought the concept to life.
Without giving away any spoilers, each section represented a different setting or period in history, and the transitions between them were handled extremely well.
As you entered a new area, you could immediately understand where and when you were supposed to be.
That’s not always easy to accomplish in a haunted attraction, especially one that moves through multiple time periods and environments.
The sets, atmosphere, and overall presentation did an excellent job of communicating the story without needing someone to stop and explain it.
I appreciated how much thought had clearly gone into making each environment feel distinct while maintaining the overall theme.
And, of course, there were plenty of opportunities for scares along the way.
The Craving delivered the strongest overall experience for me, earning the top spot on my list of A Petrified Forest’s 2026 scare trails.
Drawn to Death — Saturday Morning Cartoons Gone Horribly Wrong

My Ranking: #2
Of the three trails, Drawn to Death was the one I was most excited to experience.
The concept alone had me hooked.
Imagine the Saturday morning cartoons you grew up watching, except those familiar characters have gone completely off the rails and are now out to get you.
That’s essentially the premise of Drawn to Death, and I’m happy to say that A Petrified Forest nailed it.
Walking through twisted versions of cartoons I remembered from childhood was an absolute blast.
The creative team had a lot of fun playing with recognizable cartoon imagery and characters. Let’s just say they danced right up to the edge of some very familiar intellectual property, and maybe even wiggled a toe across the line once or twice.
There was certainly no mistaking which cartoons were being referenced!
One of my favorite moments involved a classic cartoon trope: the hallway lined with multiple doors. If you grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, you probably remember those chase sequences where characters run through one door, emerge from another, and somehow keep appearing in completely unexpected places.
Drawn to Death brought that familiar cartoon gag to life. As I made my way down the hallway, characters would pop out of one doorway, disappear, and suddenly emerge from another. It was a fantastic way to translate something we’ve seen countless times in animation into a real-world environment.
It’s those kinds of creative details that made Drawn to Death such an enjoyable experience for me.
Another standout was a certain sailor-themed scene, which felt particularly spacious and featured some impressive set design.
I won’t spoil the details, but it was one of the environments that stuck with me after leaving the trail.
Unfortunately, I did have one issue during my experience, although it wasn’t the fault of A Petrified Forest.
Some guests ahead of me were acting rather foolishly, which distracted me and dampened the experience a little.
In a haunted attraction, the behavior of the people around you can make a real difference. When guests aren’t taking the experience seriously or are drawing unnecessary attention to themselves, it can pull you out of the atmosphere the designers and performers have worked so hard to create.
That was a little frustrating, particularly because this was the trail I’d been most excited about.
Despite that, Drawn to Death was incredibly creative, nostalgic, and fun, and it easily earned my second-place ranking.
Last Responders — Disaster Strikes, and So Does the Weather

My Ranking: #3
That brings us to Last Responders, which finished third in my personal rankings.
But before anyone takes that as a negative, let me make something clear.
Last Responders wasn’t a bad trail. Far from it.
When you have three enjoyable attractions, something has to finish third!
The story revolves around a massive comet striking City Hall, unleashing a mysterious tone that causes people to become violent and dangerous as the surrounding city descends into chaos.
It’s a fitting concept for this year’s Chaos Reigns theme.
Unfortunately, my experience with Last Responders came with an unexpected distraction.
Rain.
One thing to understand about A Petrified Forest is that these scare trails are outdoors and exposed to the elements.
While I was making my way through Last Responders, it started to sprinkle.
Under normal circumstances, a little rain wouldn’t be much of a concern. However, knowing just how long these trails are, I started thinking about what might happen if the skies suddenly opened up.
Making matters worse, the group ahead of me was moving rather slowly.
So, while I was trying to enjoy the attraction, part of my attention was focused on a completely different kind of horror.
Just how soaked was I about to get?
I found myself wondering whether that light sprinkle would turn into a full-blown Florida downpour before I made it out of the trail.
I have to admit, though, part of me was genuinely curious to see what would happen if the rain got heavier.
How would the scareactors react? Would they stay in character? Would the experience change?
Thankfully, I never had to find out.
The skies held off, and I managed to make it through relatively dry.
Still, the weather and my concern about a potential downpour distracted me from fully appreciating the trail.
It’s one of those situations where the circumstances surrounding an attraction can influence your experience, even when the attraction itself is doing everything right.
Last Responders may have been my third-ranked trail, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t worth experiencing. It simply had the misfortune of competing against two trails I particularly enjoyed, along with Mother Nature threatening to join the cast.
Two Additional Horror Experiences: The Keeper’s Offering and Psychosis
Beyond the three main scare trails, A Petrified Forest offers two additional attractions for guests looking to take their night of horror even further.
Dark Road Riders: The Keeper’s Offering

The Keeper’s Offering is an interactive escape ride that combines elements of a haunted house, live-action experience, immersive show, and game.
Guests travel through the woods on what initially appears to be an innocent prop tour before things take a darker turn.
The attraction incorporates decisions that can physically change how the experience unfolds.
Unfortunately, The Keeper’s Offering was not operating on the night I attended, so I wasn’t able to experience it.
It’s certainly an interesting concept, though, and something I’d be interested in checking out on a future visit.
Psychosis

The other additional experience is Psychosis, an immersive horror attraction that takes guests into a dark, disorienting environment where physical contact is part of the experience.
According to A Petrified Forest, guests must sign a waiver, may be touched by performers, and could be separated from their group.
I didn’t experience Psychosis during this visit either.
However, having done other haunted attractions where scareactors are allowed to physically interact with guests, I can certainly appreciate the added intensity that comes with that format.
I’m sure it can be a blast for guests who enjoy that extra level of immersion.
Just be aware that Psychosis isn’t your typical walk-through haunted attraction, and it won’t be for everyone.
Both additional experiences are separately ticketed and subject to availability.
Parking and Getting to A Petrified Forest
If you’re planning to visit A Petrified Forest, there are a few important parking details worth knowing before you head out.
Parking is free, with the designated parking area located in front of Adjectives Market.
Parking Address:
1200 E. Altamonte Drive
Altamonte Springs, FL 32701
Space is limited, so carpooling is highly recommended.
There are also two nearby businesses where you absolutely should NOT park:
Do not park in front of Lechonera or at Wawa.
According to A Petrified Forest’s parking instructions, vehicles parked in these areas may be towed, and the event will not be responsible.
Nobody wants the scariest part of their Halloween night to be discovering that their car has disappeared!
Ride the Terror Trolley
Once you’ve parked, your adventure begins with a ride on the Terror Trolley, which transports guests from the parking area to A Petrified Forest.
It’s a convenient way to reach the event without having to worry about finding parking directly at the attraction.
Be sure to check the official A Petrified Forest website for current parking instructions, trolley operating times, and event information before your visit.
Final Thoughts: Is A Petrified Forest Worth Visiting in 2026?
Overall, I had a really good time at A Petrified Forest 2026: Chaos Reigns.
Having attended the Behind the Screams media preview a month earlier, I appreciated the event on a different level than I might have otherwise.
Knowing more about the work involved in building the trails, creating the costumes and makeup, developing the stories, and preparing the scareactors made seeing the finished attractions that much more enjoyable.
I also loved seeing the energy of the scareactors before the event opened. Their enthusiasm was obvious, and that kind of passion goes a long way toward creating an entertaining haunted attraction.
All three scare trails offered their own unique experiences, and the length of each one was particularly impressive.
If I had to rank them, my list would be:
- The Craving — My favorite overall, thanks to its excellent use of different historical settings and strong execution of the theme.
- Drawn to Death — A wonderfully twisted trip through childhood cartoon memories, with some clever scares and memorable set design.
- Last Responders — An enjoyable disaster-themed trail that unfortunately had me a little too distracted by the threat of a Florida downpour.
What I appreciate about A Petrified Forest is that it’s an independently owned attraction creating its own original Halloween experiences.
Rather than relying on familiar horror franchises, the team develops its own concepts and brings those nightmares to life.
And with the trails being torn down and rebuilt each season, returning guests have something new to look forward to year after year.
If you’re a haunt fan, A Petrified Forest will definitely scratch that itch.
I’d like to extend another huge thank you to the entire team at A Petrified Forest for inviting me to both the September media preview and the October haunt experience.
I had a great time, and I look forward to covering A Petrified Forest again in the future!
