Universal has a major money-maker with “Wicked” based on the box office and initial digital sales. This success is evident even before releasing the second movie.

The much-anticipated “Wicked” movie gained the massive following and appreciation Universal hoped for. Even though the second “Wicked” movie received a title change recently, Universal’s money keeps rolling in with the first installment of the film franchise.
Universal reported that the first “Wicked” movie earned an amazing $26 million on its first day. It made $70 million in its first week of digital release in the United States and Canada. According to the studio, “Wicked” had the most significant first day of sales. It also achieved the highest initial week of sales for any Universal theatrical title. For example, the smash hit “Super Mario Bros. Movie” gathered $44 million in the same time frame.
“Wicked” Movie

If you somehow missed hearing about this movie, Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood created experiences for this highly anticipated movie. Guests can see movie props and buy “Wicked” merchandise. Restaurants and hotels created “Wicked” beverages and suites. For those unfamiliar with the film, Jon M. Chu directed “Wicked,” which stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Jonathan Bailey.

The movie is set around the narrative of the classic “Wizard of Oz.” It explains how Grande’s Galinda became Glinda the Good. It also tells how Erivo’s Elphaba turned into the Wicked Witch of the West. These events occurred before Dorothy landed in Oz and created all the Yellow Brick Road chaos. The upcoming film sequel chronicles the Broadway musical’s second act, “Wicked: For Good.” Universal expects it to defy gravity in theaters on November 21.

Still, the riches should continue to pile up, involving the story of the misunderstood Wicked Witch of the West. Universal still has two months of digital exclusivity. Afterward, it will appear on Peacock, the streaming service owned by Universal’s parent company, NBCUniversal.

Should we expect more “Wicked” elements in the Universal theme parks? What about a spin-off movie or television show? Rumors have circulated for some time. They suggest transforming some old aspects of Universal Orlando into something “Wicked.” Of course, that is all wild speculation at this point. Theme park and movie fans will have to wait and see. However, we know Universal has a significant movie franchise with which to work.
